KARACHI: A policeman was arrested for attacking and critically injuring his ex-fiancée with acid in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Eid night, police said on Monday.

Constable Zeeshan attacked Raheela inside her flat in Yasir Aracade within the Mobina Town police station jurisdiction. She suffered 80 per cent burn wounds and was admitted to a private hospital, where her condition was stated to be serious, said Gulshan SP Abid Qaimkhani.

He added that the policeman posted at the Boat Basin police station was engaged to the girl but later on the girl’s family broke the engagement citing questionable character of the policeman. However, the policeman did not accept his would-be in-laws’ decision and insisted on marrying the girl. He threatened the family of dire consequences if they did not retract their decision to end the engagement, said the police officer.

After committing the crime, the policeman escaped but was later arrested in the Garden area.

The Mobina Town police have sought his remand from a court.

The Gulshan SP said the policeman had “confessed” to having committed the heinous crime.
