Vajpayee says nukes meant for deterrence

NEW DELHI, Oct 9: Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said there can be no meaningful talks with Pakistan until it stops “cross-border terrorism” in Kashmir, according to his interview to a Thai newspaper quoted by Indian news agencies on Thursday.

Mr Vajpayee said India’s nuclear weapons were meant to “deter irresponsible military adventurism and not to fight a nuclear war” and blamed Islamabad for blocking the progress of Saarc trading arrangements, United News of India reported.
