GILGIT, Oct 9: The Northern Areas college teachers called of their boycott of classes on Wednesday after four days of strike as the administration assured them that the autonomous status of the local degree college would be maintained and another degree college would be set up in the district.
The announcement was made by the Northern Areas Colleges Academic Staff Association. The administration has decided to run two degree colleges in the district in lieu of the postgraduate college, which was merged with the Karakoram International University.
The Northern Areas administration said the degree colleges — one in the city and another one in Oshikhandas — would be independent of the university.
Prof Mirza Abdul Haque and Prof Farman Baig have been named principals of the colleges.
A spokesman for the teachers’ association said their demands had been met and they would resume their duties.
