Bank shooting claims three lives, wounds four in Lahore

LAHORE: Three people were killed and four others injured on Thursday when a man opened indiscriminate fire inside the branch of a local bank in Lahore’s Iqbal town area.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Iqbal Town area Muhammad Iqbal told Dawn that an operation manager, another staff member and a security guard deployed at the bank were killed in the shooting.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore Amin Wains told journalists that the shooting might have been the outcome of a personal dispute or grudge. He said that the assailant rushed to the operational manager and shot him dead before he opened indiscriminate firing.

He further said that the attacker killed and injured several people in the bank and left his gun on the spot before fleeing. A guard of a nearby bank chased him and subdued the attacker.

The CCPO said that the attacker was also wounded during the pursuit. The assailant was handed over to the police. He was succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital.

The alleged culprit was later identified as Abdullah, a cashier at the Government Science College, Lahore.

Ruling out robbery as a motive behind the incident CCPO Lahore said that the college and assailant both were account-holders and regular customers of the branch. A further probe into the matter is under way.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the accident and sought a report from CCPO Lahore over the incident.
