GILGIT, Oct 8: Over 300 students of the Postgraduate College Gilgit took out a protest rally against the appointment of new teachers on Wednesday and blocked the University Road, official sources said.
Students were annoyed at the ongoing row between the Karakuram University (KIU) vice-chancellor and the academic staff of the Postgraduate College Gilgit because of which the Northern Areas education department banned over 30 professors from entering the college on Monday.
The sources said that the KIU administration had recently made arrangements for teachers in place of the banned ones.
The sources said that the administration on Wednesday arranged a meeting of the protesting teachers and KIU officials to resolve the issue.
They added that within a couple of days the administration would be able to arrange for a new building of the college in Gilgit to allow the banned teachers to continue their duties.
FIRS LODGED: Police on Wednesday registered at least six FIRs against unidentified protestors who created disturbance in Gilgit on Tuesday.
Official sources said that the police were not able to arrest those who blocked the main roads in the city, protesting against the killing of MNA Maulana Azam Tariq.
Sources said the army was still patrolling the roads to avoid any untoward incident.
