KARACHI, Oct 7: The Karachi Building Control Authority has completed a survey to demolish 134 dilapidated buildings in the city.

A four-member committee of the KBCA, formed to identify the dilapidated buildings in the city, has recommended demolition of 52 buildings within next three months and 65 others in one year. However, the committee was of the view that the rest of the 17 buildings are repairable.

The KBCA committee also consulted the Nazims of various towns in which dilapidated buildings exist. It suggested that hazardous buildings must immediately be demolished while others must be evacuated and repaired if these could not be razed before September 2004.

The demolition committee comprises two permanent members: Controller of Building Ateeq Baig and KBCA nominated structure engineer, while the other two are concerned town building control officer (KBCA) and representative from relevant Town Nazim.

The committee will also contact owners and dwellers of the buildings to persuade them for evacuation.—PPI
