HYDERABAD, Oct 5: People’s Party Parliamentarians chairman and ARD leader Makhdoom Amin Faheem has said that without the consent of all the four provinces the question of Kalabagh dam’s construction did not arise.
“In the absence of a consensus, not even 10 generals can construct the dam,” he said while speaking at a reception hosted in his honour and then talking to reporters here on Sunday.
He said: “We are struggling for the restoration of true democracy, the Constitution and supremacy of parliament.”
He said the ARD and MMA had agreed on a one-point agenda — not to accept the LFO under any circumstances.
He said he was not in a position to comment on other issues that might have been discussed and agreed upon between the government and the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal.
Replying to a question, the scion of Makhdoom family and chief of the Sarwari Jamaat Hala said the future of the ARD was bright and it will continue to struggle “to rid the country of generals and dictators.”
He made it clear that the LFO will not be accepted unless it was brought before parliament and approved by it.
He said an individual had no right to amend the Constitution.
He said the government was compelled to negotiate with the MMA on the LFO. He, however, said that at present the rulers were not even prepared to accept the recommendations of its own committee.
He said no general had the right to dissolve parliament and the democratic government, and usurp power.
He said the decision about dispatch of Pakistani troops to Iraq should be left to parliament. Under no circumstance should the Pakistani troops be placed under the American command, he added.
He said that by addressing the UN session, Gen Pervez Musharraf had usurped the right of the prime minister, who was the constitutional chief executive of the country. Mr Faheem said his party will move a privilege motion in parliament in this regard.
About the possibility of his party holding talks with the government, he said in politics doors for dialogue could not be slammed shut. He said if the government were to invite the opposition to discuss real issues then he was not averse to holding a dialogue.
He said the rulers never got tired of accusing the previous governments of corruption, “but they were totally blind to the fact that Gen Musharraf had grabbed power in an illegal and unconstitutional manner.”
He said there were many people who had joined the federal cabinet notwithstanding the fact that their cases were pending with the NAB while others had run away from the country.
He said cases against the supporters of the government had been withdrawn while the opposition leaders were being harassed by the NAB.
He said the rulers were frightened of Benazir Bhutto and laws were being changed every day to create hurdles in her way.
