KARACHI, Oct 5: On a day when punters burnt their fingers, Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s stable had a popular double through Love U Lady and Lady’s Love at the Karachi races on Sunday.
In a card of eight races just three favourites, Perfect Smile, Love U Lady and Lady’s Love obliged the followers of form but remained at the receiving end as some rank bad riding by seasoned jockey’s they had the worst drubbing.
The biggest culprit was the ace jockey, Shahzad who rode miserable races on Sweet Grandy in the third race who was backed like a certainty.
Shahzad never made any move which could prove his intentions of winning. Similarly, Shahzad’s handling of Saligna in the fifth race was nothing short of broad day robbery.
Any rider of his calibre will never whip his mount while negotiating the bend. On sweet Grandy and Saligna Shahzad was seen whipping his charges which not even a apprentice rider would do as these are the basics of riding. With the patronage of the people in the glass house he went scot free.
Besides Shahzad in the first race Tariq Baran astride Trust You who was backed down to half money by the followers of form after hitting the front as the gates opened ran all over the course to finish one and half length behind Jugnoo who obliged the connections.
Your Opinion who was the form horse in the third race changed hands at the week end. The new owners instead of engaging some efficient rider, engaged Mumtaz Ali, not a very efficient one and the horse remained an odds on favourite.
The stewards who generally change riders when in doubt did not change the rider on Your Opinion who lost just because of rank bad riding and Sonia who had been knocking on the doors for quite some time came home flying to register a comfortable win.
Order Of the Day caused a major upset when he beat Sapno Ki Rani who was backed confidently by the connections but failed to oblige.
On Wednesday, the connection had tried a coup d’etat but their evil designs were nipped in the bud by the race goers who refused to be taken for a ride and the stewards had to order a re-betting and the mare a backward race.
The running of On song in the sixth race was suspect as the horse after being heavily backed for a place did not run prominently in any part of the race and remained a backward runner throughout.
The next Gymkhana races will be held on Sunday, Oct 12.
