KARACHI, Oct 5: Against the population of over 140 million, Pakistan has a total of 19.3 million housing units with backlog of 4.3 million units.
At present, about 300,000 housing units are being produced annually in the country, but the estimates say that the overall production has to be raised to 600,000 annually to meet the shortfall in the next 20 years.
According to the official statistics, the rural housing constitute 67 per cent while urban housing is 33 per cent of 19.3 million housing units.
In Sindh, the total number of housing units is 4.44 million of which 48.75 per cent is rural housing and 51.25 per cent urban. The housing backlog in the province is about one million units. The annual estimated production is hardly 69,000 units while it requires to produce 138,000 units annually to meet the shortfall in the next 20 years. —PPI
