Economist Shahid Hussain passes away

KARACHI: Syed Shahid Husain, a well-known economist and former senior vice president at the World Bank, passed away in Washington after a prolonged illness, according to his family here. He was 83.

Mr Husain belonged to a distinguished family of academics, writers and journalists. Born in 1931, he studied at the University of Karachi and later did his BSc in economics from the London School of Economics, and Masters in Development Economics from Williams College in the United States. Shahid Husain joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1956. Later, he moved to the US and joined the World Bank in 1963. He retired from the WB as the senior vice-president in 1995. He also served as adviser on finance in the Z.A. Bhutto’s government from 1976 to 1977.
