PESHAWAR: A security personnel was killed and four others injured on Sunday in terrorist attacks in South Waziristan and Bannu, respectively.

A security personnel was killed when terrorists opened fire on the Sra Rogha checkpost in South Waziristan.

Four security personnel were injured in Bannu's Daryaba area when a roadside bomb exploded. According to security sources, the injured were shifted to Bannu Combined Military Hospital for treatment.

The semi-autonomous tribal areas on the Afghan border have for years been a hideout for Islamist militants of all stripes, including Al Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs.

Pakistan began a long-awaited push to clear insurgent bases from North Waziristan last June after a bloody Taliban attack on Karachi airport finally sank faltering peace talks.

A security assessment report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) claims that security forces have been proactive during the January-March 2015 quarter, mounting 312 actions against insurgents, while the latter carried out 232 militant activities.

Altogether 944 people were killed and another 619 wounded in the violent incidents. Security forces arrested 1,646 suspected militants in the operations, while the militants kidnapped 49 people during the quarter.
