‘Lyari gangster wanted in 65 cases’ killed in encounter

KARACHI: An alleged ringleader of Lyari gangsters was killed in an encounter with law enforcement agencies in the Chakiwara area on Tuesday, officials said.

They said that acting on a tip-off the police and Rangers carried out a joint raid in Singu Lane near the Noorani mosque, where a fierce gunbattle took place.

SSP-City Fida Hussain told Dawn that during the shootout a suspect, Hanif alias DJ alias Dishu, was killed. “He was one of the last remaining commanders of the Uzair Baloch gang,” he added.

Another police officer, Safdar Mashwani, said that the suspect was wanted in 65 cases, including murders of policemen.

He was leading the Uzair Baloch gang after the killing of Mab Baloch, another commander of the gang killed recently in an encounter.

He said that the encounter lasted for about 45 minutes.

Following the killing of the suspect, armed men resorted to firing in different areas of Lyari in reaction to the killing.

Suspect killed in raid on drug den

A suspect was killed in an alleged encounter in the Pak Colony area on Tuesday.

Officials said that the police and Rangers carried out a joint raid on an alleged narcotic den in Old Golimar, where an encounter took place.

Pak Colony SHO Irfan Asif said that an unidentified suspect was killed and two others managed to escape in a wounded condition.

The police claimed to have found and seized a huge quantity of narcotics at the den.

Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo announced a Rs50,000 cash reward for the police team.

‘Robber’ killed in Nazimabad

A suspected robber was shot dead and his accomplice was arrested in a wounded condition in an encounter in Nazimabad on Tuesday, according to police.

They added that two armed suspects were looting a man, Mazhar Abbas, after he drew cash from a private bank branch in Nazimabad’s Gol Market.

A police patrol reached the scene and an exchange of gunfire between them and the robbers took place. The two suspects suffered bullet wounds and one of them, later identified as Nasrullah, died. His accomplice, Muhammad Akbar, was arrested in a wounded condition.

The police said that a security guard of the bank also opened fire causing minor injuries to a passer-by, Safia Bibi, 45, in a leg.

Mugger killed in PIB encounter

A suspected mugger was killed in an encounter with police in a PIB Colony area late on Monday night.

Area SHO Gul Hasan Abbasi said that two suspects were looting a man on main University Road near the Askari park when a police patrol reached there.

In an ensuing encounter, one suspect, later identified as Najeeb Shafi, was killed, he said, adding that his accomplice, however, managed to escape on a motorbike.
