LAHORE, Sept 25: As many as 3,177 prisoners are stuffed in the Lahore District Jail having a capacity of only 1,050 and many of them are suffering from skin diseases.

District Coordination Officer Khalid Sultan was provided this information by the district jail superintendent during his visit to the jail on Thursday.

The superintendent said efforts were being made to solve the problems created due to overcrowding. He said close-circuit cameras had been installed in the jail.

The DCO inspected the kitchen and stressed the need for improving the food standard. He said the cooks should wear caps while preparing the food. He also visited the jail school.

He expressed satisfaction over maintenance of the barracks, but called for improvement in arrangements for washing the prisoners’ clothes. He directed the jail doctor to pay special attention for improving sanitation arrangements on being informed that the prisoners often suffered from itch and skin allergy.

He said the jail should have its own sugar test instruments and X-ray and ECG units besides a laboratory.
