HYDERABAD, Sept 24: Anti Greater Thal Canal Action Committee convenor and Sindh PPP president Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said that the people of Sindh will adopt all methods to stop construction of the Kalabagh dam and the Greater Thal Canal projects.
He was talking to newsmen here on Wednesday before departure of leaders of the action committee for Sanghar to resume the mass contact campaign against the Greater Thal Canal (GTC) project.
He said though the Sindh Assembly had adopted a unanimous resolution against the GTC, it was known to all and sundry that the Sindh government had taken a very weak stand on the issue.
He said the Sindh government did not want to fight the case of Sindh and accused President Pervez Musharraf of pitting one province against the other.
He said President Musharraf had illegally usurped power and was trying to destroy Sindh’s economy.
He added history was witness to the fact that the people of Sindh had always resisted dictators and the authoritarian rule.
Mr Khuhro said the government functionaries did not have the courage to come out in the open in favour of anti-Sindh projects and they were issuing only press statements regarding the issue.
Answering a question, he said if the government did not shelve the Kalabagh Dam and the Greater Thal Canal projects extreme steps could be taken.
Speaking on the occasion Chairman Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party Dr Qadir Magsi said if tens of thousands of people came out on the roads to protest against anti-Sindh projects, the rulers would have to choose between the unity of the country and constructing dams.
He believed the masses would ultimately win the war.
He said his party believed in civil disobedience movement and added that any decision taken by the action committee in this regard would be implemented.
Later, leaders of the committee including chief of Awami Tahreek Rasool Bux Palijo, SNF leader Ayub Shar, PML-N leader Afzal Gujjar, JUI leader Azam Jahangiri and general secretary Sindh Water Committee, Abrar Qazi left for Sanghar.
