ISLAMABAD, Sept 22: Former players on Monday were all praise for Aqeel Khan who starred in Pakistan’s epic 3-2 Davis Cup victory over South Korea on Sunday.
Inamul Haq, Hameedul Haq, Jamil Ahmed, Mushaf Zia and Amman A. Asghar, all of whom represented Pakistan in Davis Cup were unanimous in their views on Aqeel.
“He played brilliantly to earn Pakistan victory in a difficult situation as he had also done in the tie against China last year,” they said.
With the tie level 2-2, Aqeel sealed Pakistan’s win with a 6- 3, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Korean No. 2 Kyu-Tae Kim.
The players urged the PTF to support Aqeel financially and to provide him opportunities to play on the Satellite Circuit and ATP Futures events. “This would see further improvement in his game,” Mushaf said.
Jamil, a member of the Pakistan team that last beat South Korea in 1978, said that the non-playing captain did a good job as did Aisamul Haq. “It has indeed been a creditable performance by the players.”
Hameed said that while the team did what was expected of them, the PTF also played its part remarkably well.
“The entire team of the PTF, under the leadership of Syed Dilawar Abbas was in Lahore for the past one week to ensure that the tie was successfully held.”
Amman on the other hand criticised the Pakistan Television for their non-professional approach.
“With the tie in crucial stage, they switched to a meaningless cricket match against Bangladesh,” he said.
