Six more file nomination papers for senate polls

KARACHI: Six more candidates on Friday submitted their nomination forms for the March 5 senate election in Sindh.

Friday was the last day for filing senate nomination papers.

Twenty-eight candidates have submitted their nomination forms on 11 senate seats in Sindh.

Three candidates of the Pakistan Peoples Party —Jeean Khan Sarfraz Rajar, Dost Ali Jesser and Shama Mithani — and one each of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, PML-Functional and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement — Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Muhammad Bux and Babar Ghauri, respectively — submitted their forms in the offices of the Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday.

Except for PPP’s Mithani who filed her nomination papers for a seat reserved for women, the other five candidates submitted their forms for general seats.

The senate election in Sindh will be held on seven general seats and two each seats reserved for technocrats/ulema and women.

Eighteen candidates — eight belonging to the MQM, seven to the PPP, two to the PML-F and one to the PML-N — had submitted their nomination forms for seven general seats.

Six candidates — four of the MQM and two of the PPP — are in the run for two seats reserved for women.

Four persons — two each belonging to the MQM and PPP — are vying for two seats reserved for technocrats/ ulema.

Candidates on general seats: Abdul Latif Ansari, Saleem Mandviwalla, Islamuddin Shaikh, Gyanchand, Abdul Rehman Malik, Jeean Khan Sarfraz Rajar and Dost Ali Jessar from the PPP; Gulfraz Khan, Wasim Akhtar, Aminul Haque, Khushbakht Shujaat, Nighat Mirza, Syed Raza Zaidi, Mian Muhammad Ateeq Sheikh and Babar Ghauri of the MQM; Imamuddin Shauqeen and Muhammad Bux of the PML-F and Syed Zafar Ali Shah of the PML-N.

Women candidate are: Sassui Palijo and Shama Mithani (PPP); Khushbakht Shujaat, Nighat Mirza, Seema Zarrin and Tehseen Mashkoor Abidi (MQM).

Candidates for technocrats/ ulema seats: Farooq Hamid Naek and Abdul Rehman Malik of the PPP and Dr Abdul Kadir Khanzada and Muhammad Ali Khan Saif of the MQM.

The Karachi office of the ECP sent the nomination papers to its headquarters in Islamabad, which would forward their names to the State Bank of Pakistan, National Database and Registration Authority, National Accountability Bureau and Federal Board of Revenue for a scrutiny.

According to the election schedule, scrutiny of the candidates will be held at the ECP, Karachi on Feb 19 and 20 from 10am to 4pm; appeals against rejection of nominations could be filed on Feb 23 and 24, which will be disposed on Feb 26 and 27. The candidates could withdraw their nomination papers by Feb 28 and the final list of candidates will also be displayed the same day.
