ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has written to the MMA to seek its proposals for bringing about changes in the Local Government Ordinance in order to reform the system so that it becomes subservient to the elected governments in the provinces instead of remaining a direct presidential responsibility.
MMA’s deputy secretary general Liaqat Baloch told Dawn on Tuesday that the two sides had agreed in the Lahore talks to bring about reforms in the LG system drafted by the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) in order to narrow down the differences on schedule six of the LFO.
He said against the government’s proposal that the devolution of power plan given by the NRB should be accepted and allowed to function as it was till its first term was completed, the MMA had proposed that changes be brought about in it with the consent of the four provincial governments.
Keeping the MMA’s proposal in view, the PM has now formally written to the MMA to forward suggestions on how to amend the law to remove the objections of the provinces against it, he said.
