KARACHI: Solution to jetty issue urged
KARACHI, Sept 13: Residents of Yunusabad in Keamari Town have urged the government to resolve the outstanding issue of a jetty, which was built and used by the area people.
The jetty, linking Shamspir Island with Yunusabad, also provides a landing site for fishermen community.
Inquiries show that the issue had become a bone of contention between the local fishermen and a government agency when the Board of Revenue had allotted 41 acres land on the jetty site to a national security agency for the purpose of building an ammunition jetty.
Following uproar among the local fishermen, meetings were held between the elders of Yunusabad and officials concerned to find out a solution, but these meetings could not produce any fruitful results.
The residents claim that it had been decided in Nov 1985 that the area people would be given a new jetty site to provide a communication link between people of Shamspir and Yunusabad. But, this decision had never been implemented.
Tensions gripped in the area last week when the personnel of a national security organization tried to stop a group of people, who gathered there to protest against the national security organization.
No official statement was issued on the incident, however, a few cases were registered against some residents of Yunusabad. For the solution of this problem, Nazim Keamari Town has also approached the City Nazim and sought his assistance.
