Canal breach destroys crops, houses

KHAIRPUR, Dec 20: The Khuhra Minor developed a 50-ft-wide breach on its embankments near Suk Wahan village as a result of which 50 acres of wheat crops, 20 houses and a primary school were destroyed on Wednesday night.

None of the irrigation officials were able to arrive there as they were on Eid leave.

The villagers said that the breach had developed as the banks of the minor had become weak.

PROTEST: A large number of growers of Faiz Ganj Taluka staged a protest demonstration in Faiz Ganj town on Thursday against the acute shortage of water in the taluka.

The protesters told newsmen that some 20 dehs had gone sterile due to the water shortage while the remaining area of the taluka was getting half the usual supply.

They disclosed that more than 200 families had migrated from the tail-end area as there was shortage of water.

GROWERS: The growers of three minors — Kharal minor, Girkino minor, and Teekino minor — staged a protest demonstration in Hingorja town on Thursday against the rotation of water on three minors due to which the tail-end growers would be unable to cultivate wheat during the current season.

They said that they had recorded their complaints with the irrigation department but in vain.

They demanded the secretary irrigation, Sindh, to take immediate action against the irresponsible officials of the irrigation sub-division, Gambat.

They also alleged that the lower irrigation staff was supplying water to some influential people by breaking the modules after taking bribe.

PML LEADER: A leader of the PML (F), Khairpur District, Abdul Majeed Arain, while talking to newsmen, expressed concern over the water shortage saying that 90 per cent of the people of the taluka depend upon agriculture which has been completely destroyed due to the water shortage.

TEN INJURED: At least 10 people were injured in a dispute during a cricket match at the playground of the Government Comprehensive School, Khairpur, on Wednesday evening in which bats, stumps and stones were freely used. Five of the injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital Khairpur.
