PESHAWAR: Homage paid to Kargil hero

PESHAWAR, Sept 6: A special ceremony was held to pay homage to Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-i-Haider), a hero of Kargil, in Swabi on Saturday.

Major-General Mir Haider Ali Khan, General Officer Commanding, laid a wreath at the mazar of the Shaheed and offered fatiha.

Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed was commissioned in the Sindh Regiment in 1995. He was one of those brave officers of the Pakistan army who volunteered to join the Northern Light Infantry to defend their country at daunting heights near the Line of Control.

He sacrificed his life while launching a counter offensive against the enemy at an altitude of 18,400ft on June 28, 1999.

He, in his bid to recapture a post, not only successfully forced the enemy to retreat but also inflicted heavy casualties on it, embracing martyrdom in the process.

The valiant efforts of the Shaheed were also acknowledged by the Indian Sector Commander. He, in his note of recognition, highly appreciated the courage and determination shown by Captain Sher Khan which forced the Indian troops to retreat. —Bureau
