BANNU, July 21: Tribesmen of Janikhel area of the district’s frontier region at a protest rally organized by a number of groups have announced measures to restrict activities of non-governmental organizations in the area, terming them anti-Islam.
The speakers, mostly Ulema, criticized the NGOs for carrying out activities which, they said, were contrary to Islam’s injunctions and violated tribal norms.
They warned that violators of the restrictions would be punished in accordance with tribal traditions, which included razing of their houses and fine of Rs100,000. They declared that no tribesman would be allowed to invite people belonging to NGOs or assist them. The Ulema alleged that the NGOs and their volunteers were spreading obscenity in the area on the pretext of imparting handicraft training, particularly to women.—PPI
