Govt's move to invoke Article 245 is dangerous, says PTI

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf on Saturday said that it will not accept the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz's (PML-N) decision to invoke Article 245 in Islamabad, which calls upon the army to aid civil forces for security.

Through a statement issued by Central Information Secretary Shireen Mazari shortly after reports surfaced that the government may rethink its decision, the PTI said, "If the govt has withdrawn its invocation of Article 245, it is a realpolitik decision. Democratic sitting governments do not resort to Article 245 as it effectively signals an admission of failure to govern and maintain law and order to protect the citizens."

The party also said that if the government had announced its decision to invoke Article 245 to place the PTI's August 14 march in "confrontation" with the army, the move was a "dangerous tactic".

The PTI also reiterated that it has maintained a culture of peaceful protests, so a move to stir conflict would be futile.

"If the government thinks of using Article 245 again for Islamabad during August 14, PTI reserves the right to go to the Supreme Court," the statement said.
