KOHAT, July 15: There has been no let up in the smuggling of arms and ammunition from Darra Adamkhel, shows a survey. The opening of the Kohat tunnel last month has instead facilitated smugglers who bring arms and ammunition from Darra Adamkhel and frontier region of Kohat, and electronic goods, crockery, from Karkhano market of the Khyber Agency.
A carrier, Shino, told this correspondent that she could now make two trips to the Karkhano market and thus double her income. She trafficked in crockery and irons.
SSP Abid Ali said his department had proposed six checkpoints on the Indus Highway following reports that the tunnel was being used by smugglers.
An Anti-Narcotics Force official said his department had sanctioned a checkpoint near the tunnel and soon a site would be selected for that. The customs department would also set up a checkpoint on the Kohat side of the tunnel, an official said.
Sources said a tussle had been going on between the ANF, the customs and the National Highway Authority as to where the checkpoints would be constructed. Each department wants that it should be the first to check any vehicle.
