HYDERABAD, July 13: A large number of people, under the aegis of the Sindh Hari Committee, marched from the Haider Chowk to the press club here on Sunday to protest against construction of the Thal canal.

The protesters, including Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi, Sindh Saghar Party chief Maulana Azizullah Bohio and Sindh Labour Party chairman Dost Mohammad Channa, blocked the main road and staged a sit-in. They were led by Sindh Hari Committee president Azhar Jatoi.

They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the government and Wapda for continuing with the Thal canal construction.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jatoi said excesses were being committed against Sindh and it was being deprived of its resources and water share.

He said shortage of irrigation water had rendered thousands of acres of land in Sindh barren and construction of the Thal canal would further worsen the situation.

He said the people of Sindh would continue their struggle for the rights of the province and against the canal project till it was shelved.

STPP chairman Dr Magsi took a pledge from the people that they would block all the roads and railway tracks during the course of struggle and also join a civil disobedience movement.

Dr Magsi, who is also the provincial president of Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement, said construction of the Thal canal would only benefit Punjab.

Lashing out at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for not joining the anti-Thal canal struggle, Dr Magsi said anyone who failed to join the protest against the project could not claim to be a friend of Sindh.

Maulana Azizullah Bohyo, Dost Mohammad Channa, Akbar Jatoi, Shaheed Soomro, Comrade Usman Laghari and others also spoke on the occasion.
