PESHAWAR, July 12: The Town Council-III presented on Saturday Rs250 million budget for the financial year 2003-4 with lots of errors and mismatched figures.

The budget session was held at a local hotel and Town Council-III Nazim Yasin Khan Khalil presented the budget.

He said that Town-III had no permanent office and had occupied the squash complex at Hayatabad, and therefore they had to hold the session at a hotel.

He informed the other members that the NWFP governor had sanctioned a grant for the construction of office for the council and work would soon begin.

The Nazim failed to give accurate figures for the income and expenditures and read out from a paper calling it a “budget document”.

Eulogising his efforts and the union council staff he said that despite certain shortcomings, town administration generated Rs30 million under the head of revenue collection during the outgoing financial year 2002-03.

He said that Rs16 million had been earmarked for developmental expenditures and Rs212.7 for non-developmental expenditures including an estimated amount of Rs125.5 million for repair and maintenance of various projects during the fiscal year 2003-4.

He said the city district government had pledged to provide Rs60 million for improvement of sewerage system in Hayatabad township, while Rs30.4 million to be spent on beautification of the area.

The Nazim said that the estimated opening balance was Rs30.6 million and the provincial government would pay Rs37.4 million under the head of octroi tax.

The town estimated an income of Rs69.5 million from its own resources while the district government would pay Rs5 million in operational grant.

Mr Khalil criticized the provincial government for initiating an inquiry against him and alleged that from the day first the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government was victimizing council members.

He said that four inquiries had been conducted against him which affected his official engagements.
