HOBART (Australia) Oct 11: Germany downed New Zealand 2-1 Thursday here at the Junior World Cup to secure their place in the next round.
Germany’s victory leaves Argentina and New Zealand to fight it out on Saturday for second place in Pool D.
New Zealand were without captain and playmaker Ryan Archibald while striker Phillip Burrows played despite nursing a fracture at the back of his tibia. Germany though failed to fire on all cylinders, with key strikers, Florian Keller and Matthais Witthaus, looking out of sorts.
Elsewhere, France drew 1-1 with South Korea in a tough Pool B encounter. The Netherlands though were comfortably able to see off South Africa 3-0 to top Pool B with four points, one ahead of the South Africans.
South Korea meet South Africa on Saturday to determine who from the pool will make it though to the next round.
In Pool C matches, Spain romped home 6-1 over Canada, while India thrashed Scotland 7-1 thanks to four goals from Deepak Thakur.
Spain and India have both progressed to round two and meet on Saturday to determine who tops the pool.
Australia and England also meet on Saturday, with the English management saying they will rest their senior players given they have already qualified for round two.
