PESHAWAR, July 8: The provincial finance department has released funds worth Rs324.953 million funds for 36 ongoing schemes in the health sector for the year 2003-4, sources said.

The health department has been asked to ensure timely and proper utilization of funds during the next financial year.

Out of the total funds released by the finance department to the health department, a sum of Rs214.159 millions has been released for improving health facilities at district headquarters hospitals, through which the DHQs in the 17 districts of the province would be upgraded.

Scheme-wise release of funds includes Rs8 million for DHQ Tank, Rs10 million for DHQ DI Khan, Rs8 million for DHQ Kohat, Rs10 million for DHQ Charsadda, Rs12 million for DHQ Buner, Rs13 million for DHQ Shangla, Rs15 million for DHQ Dir (lower), Rs10 million for DHQ Dir (upper), Rs14.195 for DHQ Chitral, Rs10 million for DHQ Kohistan, Rs13 million for DHQ Mansehra, Rs8.903 million for DHQ Abbotabad, Rs12 million for DHQ Haripur and Rs8.959 million for the standardisation of DHQ Bunnu.

Similarly, Rs30 million have been allocated for the construction of DHQ at D I Khan, Rs17.222 million for DHQ Lakki Marwat and  Rs14.180 million for the  construction of Mardan Medical Complex (MMC).

Apart from that, Rs6.075 millions have been released for two schemes at Lady Reading Hospital, including Rs6 million for the completion work in gynae and paeds units of the hospital and Rs0.075 million for automation of laundry services.

A sum of Rs0.918 million has been allocated for one scheme at Khyber Teaching Hospital.

Likewise, a sum of Rs28.927 million has been given for three schemes of medical education and training component, which includes Rs22.927 million for the establishment of Gomal Medical College, Rs4 million for Saidu Medical College and Rs2 million for installing essential equipment at Khyber Teaching Hospital.

In addition to that, Rs34 million have been released for six schemes of preventive  programmes, including Rs6.355 million for expanded programme on immunisation, Rs7 million for roll back malaria programme, Rs2.545 million for promoting safe motherhood programme, Rs1 million for reproductive health project, Rs16 million for TB eradication programme and Rs1.100 million for enhanced HIV/AIDS control programme.

For basic health component Rs40.574 million have been allocated, which include Rs2 million for the establishment of health sector reforms and research unit, Rs10.978 million for the rehabilitation of existing health outlets, Rs2 million for strengthening of monitoring and evaluation capabilities of planning cell in health department, Rs2. 596 million for strengthening of EDO offices in the NWFP, Rs1 million for conversion of existing health workers into multi-purpose workers and Rs19 million for women health project.
