MIANWALI, July 6: The Punjab police on Sunday registered an FIR against the NWFP police for killing a demonstrator and critically injuring four others.
The NWFP police had opened indiscriminate fire on protesters when they blocked Mianwali-Bannu Road on Saturday inside the boundary line of the Mianwali district at Dara Tang, Isakhel.
Talking to newsmen, provincial Revenue minister Gul Hameed Rokhari termed the act of the NWFP police above law as they could not open fire on demonstrators without the written permission of a magistrate. He said that he would bring the incident into the notice of the chief minister.
Saddar Circle DDPO Muhammad Saleem Warraich said that a shepherd of Armasteywala village, Isakhel, had taken his cattle to a green pasture area inside the boundary line of the NWFP. Taking an opportunity, absconder Mosam Khan alias Mosmi of Laki Marwat captured the shepherd and his cattle. Later, he released the shepherd after six hours, but did not return the cattle.
The villagers went to Isakhel police for the registration of case. Since the incident occurred in the NWFP territory, the Isakhel SHO along with other notables went to Jand police station of Laki Marwat to launch an FIR against Mosam Khan.
However, the Jand SHO fell into a rage over the remarks of notable Gulzar Khan and refused to take legal action against the accused.
At this, the people of Isakhel blocked the Mianwali-Bannu Road inside Dara Tang. Laki Marwat DPO Jalal Khan hastened to the spot along with his force and exchanged hot words with the angry mob. The DPO then ordered firing on them, killing Amir of Sheikhabad instantly and injuring Dost Muhammad, Amanullah, Muhammad Din and Hussain Ahmed.
According to the NWFP police, they fired on protesters in retaliation when the angry mob shot and injured two constables.
