HYDERABAD, July 4: Half a dozen activists of the Insan Dost Tehrik observed a token hunger strike outside the Hyderabad Press Club here on Friday in protest against Hesco.
The chairman of the NGO, Naeem Noorani, told journalists that the Hesco authorities had made the lives of the people miserable through loadshedding, unscheduled power shutdowns and issuance of detection bills.
He regretted that the members of the legislative assemblies were keeping quiet on the tyranny of the Hesco officials.
He urged the federal minister for water and power to visit Hyderabad to witness the plight of the consumers and appealed to the president and the prime minister to save the people of Hyderabad from the excesses of the Hesco officials.
ZAKAT: A large number of villagers, including women, of Goth Bhindo Sharif and Goth Lal Hingoro, Hyderabad Taluka, have accused the chairman, Zakat and Ushr committee, Deh Bhindo Sharif, of corruption.
During a protest demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club here on Friday, they said that the chairman was distributing Zakat cheques among his relatives at the cost of the deserving people.
They demanded that the Zakat committee chairman should be removed from the post.
Seventeen deserving people also presented an application to Sindh minister for Zakat and Ushr Dr Irfan Gul Magsi, demanding removal of the chairman and distribution of Zakat among the deserving people.
The minister marked the application to the district Zakat officer, directing him to conduct an investigation in the matter and report to him in three days.
GROWERS: The farmers of Massu sub-division, who have been observing a token hunger strike for five days to protest against water shortage in their area, called off their hunger strike here on Friday on intervention of the executive engineer, irrigation, Hala sub-division, Mohammad Ali Rind.
The irrigation official assured the growers that after desilting of the area channels and repairs of their modules and watercourses, water would be released in the channels in eight days.
The farmers warned that if water was not released in eight days, they would not only resume the hunger strike but would also block the National Highway and refuse to pay water charges and other agricultural taxes.
JOURNALISTS: The journalists of Mehrabpur, Naushahro Feroze district, observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Friday in protest against the arrest of some Mehrabpur-based journalists in a “false” case.
Saleem Mughal told local journalists that the arrested newsmen were victimized for exposing professional malpractice of a doctor of the area and demanded an investigation in the matter.
