MITHI, July 3: Several villages in Thar received moderate rainfall on Wednesday as a result of which land has been moistened for cultivation.

However, the majority of the peasants are unable to buy seeds, fodder and grain to cultivate their lands due to financial strains.

The villages which received rainfall were Sainsar, Mokhar, Bitri, Harbunsar, Saghrore, Gogasar, Mithrio Khokhar, Tobhario, Vijuto, Phul Tarai, Bandho, Jareli, Jariar, Islamkot, and Dano Dhandhal.

The rain has been sufficient for ploughing the fields, but a number of villagers told this correspondent that the drought-like condition, which has been prevailing for the last four years in Tharparkar district, has made it extremely difficult for them to make both ends meet.

They said that they could not afford to purchase seeds or fodder for ploughing their lands.

The Naib Nazim, Union Council Jorou, Mohammad Sawan, said that even though my village has been blessed with rainfall, yet I am unable to plough my fields because I have no money to purchase seeds or buy cows.

The Nazim, Union Council Jhirmirio, Mohanlal, said that though the government functionaries have continued harping that wheat would be provided on subsidized rates to the drought-affected Tharis but it is never.

The Nazims said that the Tharis were living in a miserable condition.

They appealed to the government, NGOs and international relief agencies to take stock of the crisis prevailing in Thar and provide aid to the Taris on humanitarian grounds to mitigate their suffering.

BADIN: There was heavy rainfall in Kadhan, Behdmi and other towns and villages of Badin district, while lightning struck a man killing him on the spot on Wednesday night.

The rain was followed by windstorm which lashed the area for more than half an hour.

Cheno Kolhi was working in his fields, near the Fareed Khan Chandio village, Badin district, when he was struck by lightning.

Badin and other Taluka headquarter towns did not receive a single drop of rain.
