Canal breach damages crops

SADIQABAD, June 29: Hundreds of acres of standing cotton crop were inundated and wood-cutting and flour machines damaged in a breach that erupted at Lamma distributary on Sunday.

According to reports, nearly 25-foot breach developed in the distributary about 5am, flooding cotton and sugar cane crops spreading over a large area. A tubewell and equipment were also affected.

Local cultivators claimed that they had informed the irrigation authorities in time, but the latter sent a team quite late.

ARRESTED: : Police claimed on Sunday to have arrested a robber after a brief encounter near Janpur town.

Reports reaching here revealed that two residents of Shidani Sharif were going by a motorcycle when two armed men stopped them and tried to drive away with the two-wheeler. However, the driver threw the keys into a river and raised an alarm.

On receiving information, a police party reached there and fired in response to the robbers’ shooting. A robber was arrested, but his accomplice fled.

Police are in search of the absconder.
