LONDON, June 28: Zimbabwe have recalled pace bowler Douglas Hondo for Sunday’s triangular series one-day international against South Africa at Canterbury.

Hondo, who has recovered from a minor knee injury, replaces Gary Brent in the only change to the team that beat England by four wickets at Trent Bridge on Thursday in the opening match of the series.

Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak said Saturday: “Doug Hondo would have played at Nottingham and his recovery means that we will now field our strongest team for the match against South Africa.

“The win against England has given the entire squad a boost and has set us up for the game tomorrow,” fast bowler Streak added.

Meanwhile, England were confident that captain Michael Vaughan would be fit for their next triangular series match after a scan on his injured back revealed no serious damage.

The 28-year-old pulled out of England’s match against South Africa at The Oval on Saturday after suffering a back spasm during pre-match practice.

He was sent to hospital for a scan and afterwards England spokesman Andrew Walpole said: “The scan was fine. We’re treating it as a soft tissue injury and we are optimistic that he will play against Zimbabwe at Headingley on Tuesday.”

Yorkshire batsman Vaughan has missed large chunks of England’s recent international programme with injuries.

Calf trouble forced him out of England’s Test series in Pakistan during the 2000-01 season and he missed the whole of the home Ashes series against Australia in 2001 with a knee injury.

He then suffered a combination of shoulder, calf and knee problems, the latter requiring an operation, which ruled him out of the majority of England’s pre-World Cup one-day series in Australia.—AFP
