PESHAWAR, June 27: The finance and planning committee of the University of Peshawar has proposed an over Rs540.3 million budget for the university for the year 2003-04.
The university will receive Rs289.6 million as grant-in-aid from the Higher Education Commission, while Rs250.7 million would be generated by the university through its own receipts during the next financial year.
The budget will be presented before the university syndicate for approval on June 30. Vice-Chancellor Dr Zulfiqar Hussain Gillani will preside over the meeting.
Estimated expenditures for the next financial year are Rs574.7 million against Rs449.9 million for the current fiscal year.
During the year 2002-03, the university had received Rs246 million grant-in-aid from the Higher Education Commission, a federal government body, and generated Rs227 million from its own resources.
In the next year’s budget, an amount of Rs3.3 million has been proposed for the purchase of books, Rs5.5 million for litigation charges and Rs2.5 million for the purchase of staff vehicles.
In the outgoing year’s budget, a sum of Rs1 million had been specified for the purchase of vehicles.
Fuel expenses of staff vehicles have been proposed at Rs1.76 million for 2003-04, against Rs1.6 million earmarked for the outgoing year. An amount of Rs1.1 million has been proposed for vehicles’ maintenance.
Major revenue would come from self-finance scheme, examination, admission, tuition fee and hostel charges as the syndicate had already approved a raise in examination and admission fees.
According to the budgetary estimates, the university will generate Rs38 million through the self-finance scheme, including Rs10.9 million from morning shift and Rs28.03 million from evening shift.
It has been pointed out that admissions on self-finance basis have reached the maximum level and, therefore, no admission is possible in the evening shift.
The amount estimated to be generated through examination fee for the year 2003-04 is Rs130.481 million against Rs118.619 million in the outgoing year.
The document stated that the establishment of new universities in the province — Kohat, Hazara and Malakand — would affect the revenue of the Peshawar University as a sufficient number of students would appear in examinations and get admission to new universities.
Prospectus-selling has become a major source of revenue for the university and it has been estimated to generate Rs3 million next year, while an amount of Rs2 million has been specified for printing new university prospectus.
