HYDERABAD, June 25: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s Special Task Force for Sindh has accused the Sanghar police of making proxy arrests of four persons in place of peasants who were ordered to be released by the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, on Oct 29, 2001.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the coordinator for the Bonded Labour of the HRCP, Hyderabad, said a peasant, Chunnu, son of Bhalu, of Jam Nawaz Ali taluka, Sanghar, had submitted an application before the SHC, Hyderabad circuit, on Oct 9, 2001, that landlords of the area, Qadir Bux Khaskheli, Mohammad Hassan Khaskheli and Mumtaz Khaskheli, had detained 12 members of his family for non-payment of loan.
He said the SHC on Oct 29 ordered the release of the peasants. He said the peasants after release started working as labourers in Suleman Lakhi goth, Sakrand taluka, Nawabshah.
However, he said, the Berani police, Sanghar, continued to harass the peasants. The HRCP, Hyderabad, wrote a letter to the DPO of Sanghar on March 19, 2003, in this regard but the harassment was not stopped.
The coordinator said that on June 22, the Berani police arrested two growers, Ghulam Akbar and Iqbal Hussain, who had provided jobs to the peasants, in Suleman Lakhi goth. He said the police also arrested two labourers and illegally confined them at the Berani police station.
He said when the HRCP contacted the Berani police station, the police informed that the growers and labourers were detained under orders of the DPO of Sanghar and that no case was registered against them. He said the HRCP tried to contact the DPO on telephone on several occasions but he refused to talk.

SPSC: The controller of examination, Sindh Public Service Commission, Hyderabad, here on Wednesday announced that Ghulam Qadir Rind, son of Mohammad Siddiq Rind, who was interviewed by the SPSC for the post of junior stenographer, had been recommended for appointment against the post.
SCA: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has condemned the remarks of the Punjab irrigation minister and secretary and invited them to visit Sindh and see the situation for themselves.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the SCA said its weekly meeting held on Sunday had criticized the Punjab officials for saying that those protesting against construction of the Thal canal were Indian agents.
The SCA observed that the greater Thal canal project was never a part of the 1991 water accord.
It said the people of Sindh were protesting against the canal construction as it would render fertile lands of the province barren. It said the protesting people were not Indian agents.
SCA president Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah had presided over the meeting.
