Musadiq Sanwal laid to rest

MULTAN: Musadiq Sanwal, the editor of Dawn.com, was buried here Saturday after his funeral prayers were offered in the city earlier during the day.

A large number of family members and friends attended the prayers at a private school near a stadium on the Vehari road.

Mr Sanwal was laid to rest in the Bibi Paak Daman Graveyard.

He was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago, following which he underwent strenuous procedures to combat the disease. His fight ended Friday morning when he breathed his last.

Born in 1962, Sanwal will be remembered for his dedication to journalism, his closeness to his colleagues and love for the arts, most importantly music which he learnt in his younger years and performed regularly.

He studied from the National College of Arts (NCA) in the 1980s and was also trained as a singer and made regular appearances at music conferences and concerts in his youth.

Sanwal moved to Karachi in the late 1980s and shared his residence with author Mohammed Hanif for many years before both went to work at the BBC in London.

He returned to Pakistan in the mid-2000s to Dawn along with former Dawn newspaper editor Abbas Nasir.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condoles death

Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) chairman, Bilalwal Bhutto Zardari expressed sorrow and grief over the demise of Musadiq Sanwal and offered heartfelt condolence to the members of bereaved family.

In his condolence message, Bilawal said services of Musadiq Sanwal would always be remembered as he introduced new trends in cyber journalism and raised the standards of the field in Pakistan through hard-work and creativity.

His death is a great loss to Pakistani media, he added.

Bilawal prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage and fortitude to the members of his grieved family to bear this irreparable loss.
