HYDERABAD, June 18: The Jamshoro police assured the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, that it would not harass a petitioner (a businessman), and action, if required, would be taken in accordance with the law.

The additional advocate general, Sindh, Masood A. Noorani, on Tuesday held out an assurance to the court on behalf of the Jamshoro police that the petitioner would not be harassed.

The court had issued notice to the SHO, Jamshoro police station, on a constitutional petition filed by Kazim Raza Suhag, a resident of Jamshoro.

The petitioner claimed that he was a seed supplier and his shop was located at the Jamshoro railway crossing.

He said that on June 4, the SHO called him and detained him at the police station. Upon arrival of his father, he was released by the SHO with directives to give Rs300,000 to his (SHO’s) friend, otherwise he would not be allowed to do business in Jamshoro.

He said that on June 5, he and his father were again called by the SHO who repeated the same demand, and threatened to wind up his business if he did not oblige him.

The petitioner said that due to continuous illegal harassment by the SHO his life was in danger and he required protection.

He said that he had no option but to file the petition before the court.

He prayed the court to direct the SHO not to issue threats or harass the petitioner and any of his other family members.

Mr Noorani who was present in the court when the matter was taken up, waived the notice and assured the court on behalf of the Jamshoro police station SHO that the petitioner would not be harassed.

In the light of assurance by the additional advocate general, the petitioner’s counsel did not press the petition which was accordingly dismissed.
