PESHAWAR, June 17: Butchers are not following the price list as beef is being sold at various prices in the city, ranging from Rs60 to Rs85 per kilogram.

“The cattle smuggling from Pakistan into Afghanistan is on the rise which has resulted in high prices of meat in local market,” a beef-seller told Dawn.

Butchers at Notia Bazaar said cattle were smuggled into Afghanistan because Afghan traders paid Rs12,000 for a cattle which fetched Rs10,000 the local market.

At Notia Bazaar, beef is sold for Rs60 per kilogram and mutton for Rs140 per kilogram. The beef is available at Rs75 per kilogram in Tehkal and Rs85 per kilogram in Hayatabad.

The district Nazims of those districts where the cattle are reared for meat had banned the movement of cattle from one district to another before Eidul Azha to check smuggling of cattle into Afghanistan.

When the ban was lifted after Eid, smugglers became active again.

The meat shops in Notia Bazaar do not display the price list and butchers are charging what they like.

Shamim Qaiser Khan, a member of the price review committee of district council, said the committee was trying to check the increase in the prices of food items.
