BAGHDAD, June 9: A US soldier was killed by Iraqis pretending to need urgent medical treatment at a checkpoint in the western town of Al Qaim, hard by the Syrian border, on Sunday night.

One of the attackers was killed and another captured after troops returned fire, but at least one other assailant managed to escape in their car, sparking a manhunt by US forces in the town, a statement said.—AFP
