Sumaira Malik’s election de-notified

ISLAMABAD, Nov 25: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday de-notified PML-N’s Sumaira Malik’s election as a member of the National Assembly for possessing a fake academic degree.

The notification follows Ms Malik’s disqualification by the Supreme Court on Oct 28.

It said the notifications issued in 2008 and 2013 declaring Ms Malik a member of the assembly stood rescinded ab initio.

“As a result Sumaira Malik shall be deemed to have never been declared elected member of the National Assembly from constituency No NA-69 (Khushab-1) in general elections of 2008 and 2013,” the notification reads.

On the face of it, it implies that Ms Malik will have to deposit the amount she has received as salary and other perks as an MNA from 2008 onwards.

A copy of the notification has been forwarded to the secretary of the assembly, registrar of the apex court and other authorities concerned.

Ms Malik, who was a member of the former prime minister Shaukat Aziz’s cabinet, was disqualified by the court when it announced its judgment in a case challenging her BA degree and seeking her disqualification.
