GUJRANWALA, June 6: The National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) would construct underpasses in all towns and cities on the GT Road from Kharian to Lahore.
NH&MP SSP Shariq Jamal made this statement in a briefing here on Friday. He said that a fence would also be installed along the GT Road to prevent road accidents and save lives of pedestrians. This issue, he added, would be taken up at a meeting with the corps commander on Wednesday.
He said the idea to construct bridges for pedestrians in all towns on the GT Road had been dropped.
He claimed that there had been no robberies and only a few accidents on the GT Road since the Motorway Police took over. Over-speeding was being checked and the drivers involved in it were being heavy fined by the patrolling officers. He said that DSPs of all the four beats from Kharian to Lahore were paying surprise visits to various places on the road.
LIFE-TERM: A local court on Friday awarded life-term on two counts each to two convicts in a hudood case.
According to the prosecution, convicts Muhammad Afzal and Sultan Ali had abducted woman ‘S’ of Abidabad village, Naushera Virkan, some two years ago and raped her. Naushera Virkan police had arrested the accused.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Terrorism Court No 1, Gujranwala, acquitted three accused — Ghulam Shabbir, Allah Ditta and Khalid Mahmood after mediation with the complainant. They were involved in a kidnap for ransom case.
PROTEST DAY: The local District Bar Association observed a protest day on Friday against the arrest of opposition members of the Punjab assembly and manhandling by police.
The lawyers also boycotted court proceedings.
They held a meeting presided over by bar president Ilyas Rehan and condemned the arrest of opposition MPAs, including women, and demanded that they should be released instantly.
The meeting also criticized the Legal Framework Order (LFO) and termed it unconstitutional, unlawful and against the norms of democracy.
DEMO: Jamaat-i-Islami activists took out a protest procession against obscenity being spread by cinemas, theatres and circuses in the district.
They gathered outside Sheranwala Bagh on the GT Road after Asr prayer and marched up to railway station. Carrying banners and placards, they shouted slogans against the rising trend of obscenity.
They demanded that the authorities concerned should seal all these evil centres immediately.
