OKARA, May 25: The body of Dr Ghulam Rasool, the MMA Deepalpur tehsil president and the former JI Amir, was recovered from the Lower Bari Doaab Canal near Chak 96/12-L here on Sunday.
He was later laid to rest in Darbar Sakhi Saidan Saeen, Deepalpur. A large number of people, including JI district amir Capt Dr Liaquat Ali Kausar (retired), attended his funeral prayers.
Dr Ghulam Rasool was strangled by his wife Qamar Bibi and her lover Nazir Ahmad, a truck driver, and his eight accomplices on the night between May 4 and 5.
The missing of the deceased has been a mystery for the police. After piecing together some facts, the police interrogated the deceased’s wife who made a clean breast of committing the crime with the help of her lover.
Deepalpur police have registered a case.
AMENDMENTS: : The Punjab government has been directed to make amendments to the benevolent funds rules and complete proceedings on the applications of the deserving (deceased government employees) within three months.
This order was passed by Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool while hearing an appeal filed by the provincial Benevolent Funds Board against the decision of the Punjab ombudsman.
Dismissing the appeal, the governor also directed the provincial Benevolent Funds Board to decide the review cases within one month.
Raheela Karim, the widow of Dr Zafar Iqbal, filed an application for monthly monetary help to the district health officer in Dec 1996. He referred the application to the director health services, Multan, on Feb 28, 1997, who forwarded it to the central benevolent funds office on March 22, 1997.
The benevolent funds board in its meeting allowed the monthly benevolent fund to the widow from the date of hearing of the application.
At this, the widow moved the provincial ombudsman asserting that the application was filed according to the rules, but the health department and benevolent funds board delayed the process.
Therefore, she prayed that the monthly benevolent fund should be given to her from the date of the death of her husband.
After hearing the appeal, the ombudsman directed the benevolent fund board administration to pay funds to the widow from Sept 21, 1996, the date of the death of her husband.
