ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: The World Food Programme (WFP) needs $31 million immediately to continue its operations in Pakistan until the end of this year, its spokesman said on Saturday, requesting donors for help.

Amjad Jamal told APP that $6m was needed to cover the costs for handling the wheat donated by the country’s government.

Replying to a question, he said recent contribution of $4.5m from the UK Department for International Development had helped the WFP to extend assistance to the vulnerable displaced communities in the northwest Pakistan.

He said the UK-DFID’s contribution would allow the WFP to procure 2,145 tonnes of fortified mixed food commodities, as well as the transportation and distribution of over 6,500 tonnes of wheat donated by Pakistani government.—APP
