3 arrested on court premises

GUJRANWALA, May 23: Three armed men were arrested from the district courts on Friday for a possible attempt on the life of an official of the banned religious outfit, the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP).

SSP former divisional secretary Rana Ghulam Sarwar was being taken to a court in connection with a murder case. He saw the three suspects who were following him and started shouting that they would kill him.

They were followed when they tried to escape and caught by the police. Two pistols and a carbine was recovered from their possession. The police also impounded the car in which they reached the courts.

Police did not disclose their identity.

Transporters threat: The public transport vehicle owners threatened on Friday that they would go on strike, if their arrested colleagues were not set free in the next 24 hours.

Organizing a meeting here, they alleged that the traffic police demanded illegal gratification from them.

They said the police had arrested some of their colleagues and impounded their vehicles when they were protesting against the traffic police’s extortion on the Sialkot Road.

Meanwhile, the Transport Society Gujranwala owners also protested against the traffic police for removing wooden benches from their vehicles and issuing them tickets for what they claimed meeting their target.

WOMAN SMUGGLER: The Baghbanpura police claimed to have arrested woman narcotics dealer and recovered five kilograms of hashish from her possession on Friday.

Police raided her hideout on a tip off and arrested her.

She confessed during interrogation that she brought the contraband from the Tribal Areas for supply to Multan, Lahore and Gujranwala.

IDENTIFIED: Four of the six people who were killed in a collision between a two buses near Kamoki two days ago were identified on Friday.

They are; Ghulam Rasool of Allama Iqbal Road, Lahore, his sister Parvin, Zahid of Chak 49, Sargodha, and Bashir of Pirwala.

Two other women have not yet been identified.

Twenty other people sustained injuries who were discharged after first aid.
