Zaka Ashraf's appointment as PCB chief declared illegal

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has declared the appointment of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf illegal and ordered the Election Commission to hold PCB elections within 90 days.

On the application of Major (retd) Nadeem Sadal, the high court gave an advanced decision on Ashraf’s appointment. The three member high court bench was headed by Justice Shaukat Aziz.

The decision stated that the chairman PCB should abide by article 62, 63 of the Constitution, under which a first class or test cricketer or a graduate could contest in the PCB elections.

The order noted that president's role was merely symbolic in the selection of PCB chairman and that Zaka Ashraf's appointment was not made due to experience but rather personal relations.

The high court also ordered the PCB to remove illegally appointed officers from their positions.

With relation to this decision, a short order has been issued which bars Zaka Ashraf from working further.

The decision has given the election commission the responsibility of carrying out free and fair PCB elections within 90 days.
