KARACHI, May 22: The Nazims and councillors of three union councils of Keamari Town on Thursday observed hunger strike to voice their anger over persisting water shortage in Bhutta Village, Gulshan-i-Sikandar and other parts of the town.

Nazim of the town’s UC-1, Mohammad Hanif Soda said that different parts of the three union councils were deprived of water for the last 20 months.

Deploring that although the water and sanitation department’s chief engineer, Khalid Malik, had assured them a month back that their supply would be restore in 10 days, they were still without water.

MPA Akhtar Hussain and a former MPA Hamayun Muhammad Khan visited the hunger strikers’ camp and assured them their full cooperation in getting the supply in the affected localities of Keamari Town restored.

GULSHAN: Residents of Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s block 4-A, Ranchhore Line, Lyari’s Nawabad, Kumharwara Road and Eidu Lane also remained without water for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday.

Residents of the affected locality said that were getting no water for the last four or five days. They lamented that the concerned officials of the water and sanitation department had not yet bothered to take measures to restore the supply despite a number of complaints lodged with them.

They demanded of the city Nazim and the W&S department’s executive district officer to direct the concerned officers to immediately restore the supply as in the absence of piped water, they had no choice but to either consume sub-soil water or buy private tankers at exorbitant rates.

The localities which went without water on Thursday under weekly water-holiday system include Landhi, Korangi, Defence Housing Authority, National Refinery, Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan Railways and PAF (Korangi) Base and its adjoining areas.

CLOSURE: The localities where water supply would remain suspended on Friday include Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 10-A, 13-A, 13-B, 16, 17 and 18.
