Frogs

It’s raining frogs!

You must have heard of the idiom ‘it’s raining cats and dogs’. Well, we can’t say if it can really happen or not, but what we can tell you for sure is that it can rain frogs! Throughout history there have been incidents of frog falling down from the sky with raindrops, usually during a thunderstorm. As recent as April 2010, it rained toads in the town of Villa Angel Flores, Sineloa, Mexico, after a tornado. The toads were believed to have been from a lake nearby and carried away by the strongs winds of the tornado. Earlier, in June 2005, Odzaci, a town in north-western Serbia, had tiny frogs raining on it, but without much raindrops falling along with them, after strong winds brought storm clouds over Odzaci. These frogs were different from the kind that were found in the area and so they must have been carried there by the storm. Scientists believe that waterspouts and tornadoes can suck up the surfaces and lakes, marshes and other bodies of water. When they do, they can take frogs and fish along for the ride. The tornadoes can then drop them miles away. So now you know it’s not magic but just a trick of nature when something strange falls down with rain over you!
