THIS is apropos of the letter ‘Impressions of May 11 voting’ (May 16) by Cdre (r) Sajjad Ali Shah. There is no doubt that the proportional representation system suits our country as about 50 per cent of our people, who belong to rural areas, are illiterate and depend on big zamindars, sardars, Khans, Chaudhries and tribal chiefs.
The proportional representation system gives an opportunity to party leaders to bring educated, capable and visionary people from society to serve this country and form policies based on merit.
The current system, on the contrary, handicaps party leaders who are forced to give party tickets to those who are capable of getting elected from their respective constituencies.
Can we imagine Dr Attaur Rahman, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Dr Samar Mubarkmand becoming our parliamentarians? Absolutely not. The current system is protecting the interests of fake degree holders, tax evaders, corrupt and criminals, that is why they are big supporters of ‘democracy’.
Despite all the above-mentioned facts, I am sure the current assembly cannot legislate in order to bring in the proportional representation system because all party members know that after the legislation they cannot dictate their leadership.

Challenges for govt PML-N is going to form the government after having won elections 2013. The nation wants solutions to terrorism, loadshedding, unemployment, drone attacks and inflation.
The new government should take up these issues on a priority basis from day one. It should ensure good governance and wipe out corruption from its grassroots.
A small cabinet should be formed which should include only competent and honest members. The responsibilities for the government have increased manifold during the last five years which is why people with integrity are needed all the more.
Fair and transparent accountability should be started. All looters and plunderers should be taken to task until they return the looted money to the national exchequer.
It is hoped that the new government would fulfil all promises made during the election campaign.

The previous government failed to deliver to the people according to their expectations and thus their way to Islamabad was blocked by the power of vote.
Every nation evolves with time and then reaches the height of success and gets its name respected all over the world. The new wave of change proved the enthusiasm of Pakistani nation towards Pakistan and their love and devotion towards the betterment of the country.
