GUJRAT, May 19: The PPP and PML-N activists have called the FIR lodged against the Kharian tehsil Nazim a rough deal by the provincial government.
Speaking at a joint press conference at the Nawab Palace on Monday, they alleged that the Chaudhrys of Gujrat had first got the local chamber of commerce and industry sealed. “Now they want to eliminate opposition parties like the PPP and PML-N from the district,” they added.
They said the PPP had filed an application with the provincial local body commission against District Nazim Chaudhry Shafaat Husain’s ‘irregularities’ a year ago. However, the authorities concerned took no legal action against Shafaat, who is younger brother of Shujaat Husain and cousin of Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi.
Opposition leader Nawabzada Tahirul Mulk alleged that the district Nazim, without taking the house’s approval, had carried out development projects worth millions of rupees before the Oct 10 elections allegedly to muster support for the PML-Q nominees. He added that the government was reluctant to take action against him.
According to the PPP leaders, action against the Kharian tehsil Nazim on the complaint of a Naib Nazim showed that the Chaudhrys were involved in the conspiracy.
Meanwhile, Nazims, their deputies and councillors have flayed the registration of a case against the tehsil Nazim at a meeting.
