RAWALPINDI:  As many as 6,000 additional police personnel will be recruited on daily wages for three-days to assist the local police during the elections, and each recruit will be paid Rs250 per day, it has been learnt.

The fresh recruits will be selected from retired police and army men or from volunteers. The civilians having good reputation in their respective areas will also be preferred.

Abdul Razaq Cheema, City Police Officer (CPO), said the police had been facing manpower shortage hence the temporary arrangement had been made.

He said the recruitment of extra police personnel would be subject to clearance by the Special Branch and police station of the area from where they were selected.

The fresh recruits will have all the police powers, and they will be decorated with police badges. They, however, will not be allowed to wear police uniform.

He said the fresh recruits selected for three days would be paid only Rs250 per day.

To a question, he said highly sensitive polling station would have more police force than those which were less sensitive.

After the recruitment, the personnel will receive training in handling the security situation during election days. The fresh recruits will be deployed at the outer cordon during the election days.

He said in addition to the recruitment of additional police force, extra police personnel would be called from Punjab Constabulary, Police Training School Rawat and Police College Sihala to assist the local police during election days.

Nearly 2,150 polling stations would be established in Rawalpindi district which has been divided into 20 sectors. Of the 2150 polling stations, nearly 93 had been declared as most sensitive in Rawalpindi.

The Election Commission of Pakistan had already directed the police to prepare a contingency plan for the smooth conduct of Election 2013.

In line with the security guideline given to the regional police officers (RPOs) the candidates contesting elections had already been allowed to keep four private security guards for their protections. However, their security clearance from the special branch and the police station concerned will be mandatory.

The private security guards hired by the candidates shall be issued temporary cards of ‘private security guard’ by the district police officer concerned after the security clearance.

Candidates facing terror threats had already been directed to take extra care while campaigning for elections.
