ATTOCK, April 21: In wake of the terrorist threats on the upcoming elections, the Attock police, on the direction of secret agencies, have reviewed the security plan to keep a check on entry of terrorists from the bordering districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Police sources said here on Sunday that with the recent attacks on contesting candidates in different parts of the country, the government has given special instructions to the police to beef up security.
It has asked the police to ensure surveillance of the 80km mountain belt that passes through Attock from Ghorghusti Village of Hazro to Mukhad Village of Jand Tehsil. Criminals usually use this difficult terrain for inter-provincial movement because of the strict checking at normal routes by the law enforcement agencies, sources said.
Attock district is connected with three KP districts (Swabi, Nowshera and Kohat) through the Indus River, which is also the border line of KP and Attock. In response to these directives, a police team, led by district police officer (DPO) Abdul Kadir Qamar, visited the bordering areas and inspected five riverine police posts at Bagh Neelab, Mukhad, Jaba, Formuli, and Shadipur villages.
Upon contact, DPO Kadir said the district police was on high alert and monitoring all entry points of the district, and Rangers were assisting the police at the Attock-Indus River Bridge on G.T. Road. He added that the district police had an ideal liaison with the intelligence agencies.
Recently, heavy boats with surveillance gadgets had been provided to the riverine posts. Commenting on these, the DPO said the boats were not suitable for patrolling a river as they were meant for sea patrolling.
“The district police are trying to get lighter boats, fit for river patrolling, which would consume less fuel and thus be more economical,” he said.
